Circulated for a Polokwane Robbery — Found Working as an Uber in Benoni

A robbery in Polokwane. A circulated vehicle on the road in Benoni. And in between the two, a driver taking fares who had no idea what he was sitting in.

The vehicle had been identified and circulated by SAPS after it was allegedly used in the commission of a robbery in Polokwane. By the time the NoJack Anti-Hijacking Unit located it, it was no longer sitting still in a yard — it was working the roads as an Uber.

A Circulated Vehicle, Hiding in Plain Sight

Circulation is the point at which a vehicle stops being just a car and becomes evidence. Once SAPS flags a registration in connection with a crime, that vehicle carries the case with it wherever it goes — and the longer it stays in circulation on the road, the more that case gets muddied.

The individual who was allegedly driving the vehicle at the time of the Polokwane robbery is wanted by police in connection with the ongoing investigation. The vehicle itself, meanwhile, had simply carried on earning — logged into a ride-hailing platform, moving through traffic like any other trip.

That is what makes these matters awkward rather than dramatic. There is no chase, no barricade. There is a car doing something entirely ordinary, with something entirely unresolved attached to it.

An Owner Who Would Not Cooperate

The registered owner of the vehicle repeatedly refused to cooperate with law enforcement, despite the vehicle having been circulated for its alleged involvement in the crime.

Every refusal costs something. Detectives lose days. The vehicle stays in the wind. The driver behind the wheel — who may have no connection to the original incident at all — keeps carrying passengers in a car that is going to be seized the moment it is found. What should have been a short administrative process instead became a drawn-out one, with unnecessary delays and complications for everyone working the investigation.

The Interception

The NoJack Anti-Hijacking Unit successfully located and intercepted the vehicle. Our team stopped it, made contact with the driver, and calmly explained exactly what he was in the middle of — a circulated vehicle, an open SAPS case, and a process that now had to run its course.

There was no incident. That is not luck, and it is not a small thing. Interceptions go wrong when the person behind the wheel does not understand what is happening to them and reacts accordingly. Explaining the situation properly, before anything else, is what keeps a stop like this from turning into something else entirely.

The vehicle and its driver were escorted to SAPS Benoni, where both were handed over to the investigating detectives.

Handed Over — and That Is Where Our Part Ends

The registered owner later arrived at the police station. From that point the SAPS detectives took over the investigation and dealt with the matter in accordance with the law.

This is the boundary we work to, on every single recovery:

• We intercept — the stop is made safely, calmly, and without incident

• We preserve — the vehicle is contained and the evidence is protected, not compromised

• We hand over — SAPS takes the case, and the investigation belongs to them

A recovered vehicle is only useful to a case if it arrives at the police station intact, with the story around it still clean. Our job is to get it there.

Once a vehicle is handed to SAPS, the investigation and any further legal action remain the responsibility of the South African Police Service. There is a lesson buried in this one, and it is aimed squarely at owners. If your vehicle has been circulated in connection with a crime, obstruction does not make the problem go away — it just guarantees the process takes longer, costs more, and ends with the vehicle being taken anyway.

Cooperating early gets you answers, gets detectives what they need, and gets an innocent driver out of a car that was always going to be stopped.
