R8,000 for a Trip to KZN — and Then He Tried to Ram NJ3

An Uber driver received R8,000 from clients for a trip to KwaZulu-Natal, then allegedly refused to take them and refused to refund the money. The victims opened a case — and during the pursuit, the suspect repeatedly attempted to ram the NJ3 NoJack Amarok. A SAPS Tactical Response Team in the area saw it happen and stepped in.

It started as a lift to KwaZulu-Natal.

An Uber driver received R8,000 from clients for a trip to KZN. A long drive, a fair amount of money, and an arrangement that should have been simple: they pay, he drives, everybody arrives.

It did not end on the road to KZN. It ended on the tar, in handcuffs, with a SAPS Tactical Response Team standing over him.

The Trip That Never Happened

When the time came to transport the clients, the driver allegedly told them that he was not going to take them to KZN.

And despite having received their money, he allegedly refused to refund the R8,000.

Think about where that leaves people. The money is gone, the trip is gone, and whatever they were travelling to KwaZulu-Natal for is now out of reach. R8,000 is not a small amount for most households, and it is rarely money people can simply find again.

The victims did the right thing. They opened a case with the police relating to alleged theft and fraud.

Then the Story Took a Very Different Turn

A dispute over a refund is one thing. What happened next is something else entirely.

During the pursuit of the suspect, he repeatedly attempted to ram the NJ3 NoJack Amarok.

Not once. Repeatedly.

That turned an alleged theft and fraud matter into something that put the lives of the NoJack recovery team at serious risk — along with everybody else sharing the road with them. A vehicle used as a weapon at speed does not choose who it hurts.

A dispute over R8,000 became a vehicle used as a weapon.

The TRT Was in the Area

Fortunately, a SAPS Tactical Response Team was in the area and witnessed what was happening.

The TRT members intervened and assisted in stopping and apprehending the suspect.

There is something worth noticing in that. Nobody had to explain to the TRT what was going on, or persuade them the situation was serious. They saw it with their own eyes, and they acted. When police officers witness a vehicle trying to ram a recovery team, the conversation is a short one.

The matter is with SAPS.

If You Are Paying for a Long-Distance Trip

Most drivers are honest, and most long trips go exactly as planned. But this story is a reminder to protect yourself before money changes hands:

  • Be very careful about paying a large amount up front, especially in cash or by direct transfer to an individual

  • Where you can, book and pay through the platform rather than making a private arrangement with a driver

  • Keep proof of every payment and every message about the arrangement

  • Get the driver's full name, vehicle and registration before you hand over any money

  • If something goes wrong, do what these victims did — open a case. It is what set everything else in motion

Another Dangerous Pursuit, Brought to an End

Another dangerous pursuit was brought to an end through coordinated action between Elite Ops East Rand — NoJack — and SAPS.

Our thanks to the SAPS Tactical Response Team members who saw what was happening and stepped in without hesitation. And to the NJ3 crew: you were driven at, repeatedly, and you stayed on him anyway.
