“We Were Waiting for Them” — Prado Theft Suspects Boxed In at a Benoni Sports Ground

Out on bail after an arrest in Nigel the Saturday before, four suspects were apprehended at the sports grounds in Brodigan Street, Benoni, allegedly in the process of stealing a Toyota Prado. An LPR camera hit, a coordinated block-in, two vehicles on false plates — one positively identified as stolen in Brakpan — signal-jamming equipment recovered, and a minimum of 30 vehicle-theft cases linked to them by the end of the day.

We missed them once before.

We were waiting for them.

On Saturday, 19 September 2026, at approximately 14:00, four suspects were apprehended at the sports grounds in Brodigan Street, Benoni, where they were allegedly in the process of stealing a Toyota Prado. The Prado did not leave the grounds. Neither did they.

This was a joint operation, and we were proud to be one of the units in it.

It Started With Information

Information was received regarding a vehicle suspected of being involved in multiple vehicle theft incidents across Brakpan, Boksburg and Benoni.

The ECCA — the East Rand Community Assist Control Room — immediately began monitoring and searching for the vehicle.

Shortly afterwards, it was picked up by an LPR camera operating in the area. That is the moment a tip-off turns into a location. Ground members from CCIN and various private security companies responded and tracked the vehicle to the sports grounds in Brodigan Street.

A tip-off tells you who to look for. A camera hit tells you where they are.

Boxed In

On arrival, the responding members found the suspects inside the sports grounds, allegedly in the process of stealing a Toyota Prado.

When the suspects realised members were approaching, they tried to flee the grounds in their vehicle.

They were blocked in. Through rapid coordination between anti-hijacking units, law enforcement and private security partners, the suspects were prevented from leaving the premises.

While the scene was being dealt with, members identified a second vehicle inside the sports grounds believed to be linked to vehicle theft activities. Additional members were deployed immediately, and that vehicle was intercepted too.

Two Vehicles, Both on False Plates

  • White Toyota Corolla — displaying false registration plates, and positively identified as stolen in Brakpan

  • White Haval H6 — displaying false registration plates, and believed to be linked to vehicle theft activities

So a vehicle positively identified as stolen was recovered on the spot, in the middle of what is alleged to have been an attempt to take another.

Four Suspects, and the Equipment

A total of four suspects were apprehended on scene.

Various items of equipment believed to have been used in vehicle theft and signal-jamming activities were also recovered from the vehicles.

That last part deserves a moment. A signal jammer has one job: to stop a vehicle from calling for help. It is aimed squarely at the technology owners pay for to protect themselves — the tracking unit, the remote locking, the alarm. Jamming equipment in a vehicle suggests that whoever brought it knows what they are up against and has come prepared to beat it.

It is also why no single layer of protection is enough on its own, and why cameras, control rooms and people on the ground still matter.

Out on Bail

Here is the detail that turns a good day into a frustrating one.

These suspects had been arrested the previous Saturday in Nigel, and were out on bail.

One week. That is how long it was before they were found on a sports ground in Benoni, with false plates and jamming equipment, allegedly working on another Prado.

Bail is a legal right, and it is not our place to second-guess the courts on an individual matter. But it is our place to tell you what happens on the ground, and what happens is this: the same people come back. That is exactly why we keep vehicles and people on the system, and why we do not stop watching after an arrest.

By the end of the day, a minimum of 30 cases of vehicle theft had been linked to them.

Thirty. That is thirty owners, thirty case files, and thirty times somebody walked out to where they had parked and found an empty space.

We missed them once before. We were waiting for them.

Why This Worked

Nobody on the list below could have done this alone. Intelligence started it. A camera placed the vehicle. A control room coordinated it. Ground members closed the exits. Law enforcement took it from there.

This intervention shows what intelligence sharing, LPR technology, effective control-room coordination and the rapid deployment of law enforcement and private security resources can do when they pull in the same direction. The vehicles were located, intercepted and stopped from leaving the area, a vehicle positively identified as stolen was recovered, and four suspects were apprehended.

The matter is with SAPS.
